Before Your Wedding - "Marriage License Requirement "

Marriage License requirements vary from state to state. There are a couple of requirements that are constant among all of the states: 1) You have to get the license in the parish/county where you are to be married, not the parish/county where you live, and 2) you have to get your license in person. Some states require both the Bride and the Groom to be present.

Check with the Clerk of Courts office in the parish/county that you are getting married in to get specific information about which documents they require you to bring, and what form of payment they accept (it’s usually cash).

Some of the standard required documents and information that is needed from both of you are:

• Birth Certificates (originals only, no copies)
• Photo ID
• Social Security Number
• Your parent’s full name, your mother’s maiden name, and the state in which they were born
• Death Certificate, if either of you are widowed
• Divorce Papers, if either of you are divorced
